About four out of every five homes in the United States have asphalt shingle roofs. And it is no wonder; asphalt shingles are relatively inexpensive compared to other roofing materials, come in a wide array of styles and colors and are very easy to install. They are also extremely durable and easy to maintain.
But like with any component of your home, asphalt shingles are not invulnerable to damage. In today’s post, your friends over at Easton Roofing share the basics on how to read your asphalt shingles to tell whether or not they need to be repaired or replaced.
Asphalt shingles do not last forever. Depending on your climate and how well you take care of them, asphalt shingles will have a service life of between 15 to 30 years. Here are just a few signs that will tell you whether or not you will need a roof repair company to help you replace your aging shingles:
Curling. This is a natural process for all asphalt shingles and is by no means a sign of a manufacturing defect. They will shrink and warp over time due to constant exposure to the elements.
Cracks. This is also a normal occurrence and is a natural sign of weathering. If you notice minor cracks on your roof, it is not necessarily a cause for alarm. As long as the cracks do not penetrate through the shingles and are still effective in repelling water, there is no immediate need to replace them.
While minor curling, warping and punctures are all normal occurrences, there are some signs of damage that should never be ignored. If you notice excess granule loss, major buckling or distortion, and punctures that are so deep that it penetrates into your roof’s underlayment resulting in leaks, then you should not hesitate to call your trusted local roofer right away.
