How Can Flashing Protect the Roof?

Moisture is one of the biggest enemies of any type of roofing. That’s why it’s important to add as much protection to your roof as possible. One of the components that can shield your roofing system from moisture penetration, leaks and water damage is the flashing.

From What Materials Are Flashings Made?

Flashing is commonly made from rust-resistant metal like copper, galvanized steel and aluminum. Galvanized steel is considered the most widely used. However, for DIY enthusiasts, aluminum is a great choice since it’s usually easy to bend. Meanwhile, copper is only used for custom fabrications, such as those for copper roofs. In other cases, roofers also use flashing made from rubber, plastic or roofing felt.

What Are the Different Types of Flashing?

Since there are varying placements or functions for the flashing, it tends to come in different shapes and sizes. Some types of flashing used in residential and commercial roofing are the following:

  1. Drip Edges – Placed under the edges of the roof rakes and eaves

  2. Roof Valleys – Shaped like the letter “W” and installed on an area where two roof planes meet

  3. Step Flashing – Used to protect the sidewalls of chimneys and skylights

  4. Chimney Flashing – Placed around the chimney

  5. Continuous Flashing – Installed between a sloped roof and a vertical wall

To know which types of flashing you need for your home or building, consult with a professional roofer.
