Know How to Properly Use a Ladder

Inspect the ladder for any signs of damage, and replace it if you find any.

Check the ladder’s maximum load rating to see if it can support you and your tools.
Make Sure the Ladder Is Standing on Firm Foundation

Avoid placing your ladder on shaky or slippery ground, or setting it against an unstable surface like a window pane. However, if you can’t place the ladder base on or set it against anything firmer, place a board beneath the ladder’s feet.

If you can’t reach something using your ladder alone, get a taller one. Don’t use stacked boxes or other objects to extend your reach.

If you’re using straight or extension ladders, fasten them to upper supports. And for step ladders, make sure they’re completely open before using them.

Observe the four-to-one rule when setting up your ladder. A straight or extension ladder should be set up a foot away from the surface for every four feet of the ladder’s height.
