Ladder

Safety Tips for Using Ladders

Ladders are an invaluable tool for homeowners who are fond of DIY home projects, but, if they’re not used properly, they could pose a fatal risk. Almost 247,000 people ended up in the emergency room last year due to ladder-related injuries. Easton Roofing, one of the top roofing contractors in the state, recommends you observe the following safety precautions to prevent fatal falls.

Know How to Properly Use a Ladder

  • Inspect the ladder for any signs of damage, and replace it if you find any.

  • Follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions and warning.

  • Check the ladder’s maximum load rating to see if it can support you and your tools.

Make Sure the Ladder Is Standing on Firm Foundation

  • Avoid placing your ladder on shaky or slippery ground, or setting it against an unstable surface like a window pane. However, if you can’t place the ladder base on or set it against anything firmer, place a board beneath the ladder’s feet.

  • If you can’t reach something using your ladder alone, get a taller one. Don’t use stacked boxes or other objects to extend your reach.

  • If you’re using straight or extension ladders, fasten them to upper supports. And for step ladders, make sure they’re completely open before using them.

  • Observe the four-to-one rule when setting up your ladder. A straight or extension ladder should be set up a foot away from the surface for every four feet of the ladder’s height.

Be Careful When Using the Ladder

  • Reposition the ladder instead of leaning.

  • Use slip-resistant shoes.

  • Use a tool belt instead of carrying tools.

Check the Weather Conditions

  • For DIY roofers, be mindful of the weather. Avoid doing any work outside or using extension ladders in bad weather.

  • Clean your ladder after using it to wash off accumulated dirt.

Considering the risks involved, you should avoid using ladders unless it’s absolutely necessary. In the case of DIY renovators doing exterior work, we recommend you hire roofing contractors to avoid any injuries to yourself or damage to your exterior. Also, make sure to hire a reputable contractor.
