Upgrading to 6-Inch Gutters: Is It Worth the Investment?

One of your home’s biggest enemies is water. To deflect it away from your property, you need quality gutters that are sized correctly to ensure efficiency. Size does matter, after all, especially when it comes to guttering. If your current 5-inch gutters are already past their serviceable life, you might want to consider upgrading to ones that are an inch bigger. With 6-inch gutters, you improve the efficiency of your home’s drainage and protect your foundation from the threat of water damage.

What Are the Benefits of 6-Inch Gutters?

Gutters should be the correct size to accommodate the water runoff from your roof. If you have the common 5-inch gutters installed but still see water overflowing on the sides, it makes sense to go bigger and invest in a 6-inch gutter system. The bigger size is more efficient at water drainage and can accommodate nearly twice the amount of water as 5-inch gutters.

Signs You Need Bigger Gutters

Depending on your home’s structure you may need 6-inch gutters. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • If you have a high-pitched roof, you might find it best to drain rainwater with 6-inch gutters. Take note that the higher the pitch, the faster water runs off.

  • If you live in a multistory home, the gutters on the second or third story will eventually flow and drain into the first-story gutters. Your first-story gutters need to accommodate much more water, so be sure to install a sufficient guttering system. This way, the first-story gutters can catch and drain water runoff from the additional stories.

  • If you clean your gutters yourself, you can save time and effort with 6-inch gutters. Thanks to the big top “mouth” of the gutter system, it’s easier to clean out leaves, branches or any debris buildup. It’s also worth noting that your roof shingles will cover a portion of the gutter. This means that small gutters are more difficult to access because the gutter opening is smaller.
