Ways Your Roof Will Benefit From Good Attic Ventilation

While your attic ventilation is not something you always think about, it is essential to your home. It keeps your roofing system efficient and can even extend its life. With good airflow, your spaces will be easier to cool or heat, helping reduce your energy costs.

Here are reasons your roof needs sufficient attic ventilation.

Avoid Moisture-Related Problems

An efficient attic ventilation system removes excess heat and moisture that can damage your roof and the rest of your home. Excess humidity can cause different issues in cold and hot climates. If you live in a place with intensely hot summers and cold winters, you can deal with both issues. Making sure that your attic has sufficient ventilation can save you money from roof repair costs.

Prolong the Life of Your Roof

Too much heat can cause warping of the roof’s sheathing and early deterioration of shingles. The heat can travel down your living space if the attic floor doesn’t have enough insulation. Besides premature roof failure, you might also have to deal with more HVAC malfunctions and higher energy costs. Proper ventilation and insulation allow the attic to remain at moderate temperatures, reducing the likelihood of these issues.

Reduce the Risk of Ice Dams

In winter, ice dams tend to form in under ventilated roofing systems. It occurs when snow melts on the upper, warmer area of the roof and drips down onto the colder outer edges and refreezes. When left unaddressed, ice dams will continue to accumulate and keep melted snow from draining properly. With nowhere to go, water will eventually seep through the shingles and into your interior. You can avoid this issue with a properly installed underlayment and well-ventilated attic.
